AC runs harder and longer in Tenerife than almost anywhere in Europe. Here's how to keep it reliable.

Air conditioning in Tenerife isn't a seasonal luxury the way it might be further north — for a lot of properties it runs for a large part of the year, which means the maintenance schedule that works fine in a milder climate isn't really enough here.
How often should it be serviced?
Once a year is the general baseline for a residential system used normally, ideally scheduled in spring before the summer rush. Villas with multiple units, or any system used heavily for rentals, generally benefit from a check twice a year — once in spring and once in early autumn. An extra filter check after a significant Calima dust event is also worth doing outside the normal schedule, since dust builds up faster than usual during those periods.
What does a service actually check?
A proper AC service covers filter cleaning, refrigerant level checks, condensate drain clearing (a blocked drain is one of the most common causes of a unit 'leaking' water indoors), electrical connection checks, and a general performance test comparing cooling output against what the unit should be delivering. Cleaning filters yourself between professional visits — most units make this simple — genuinely helps and costs nothing.
Signs you shouldn't wait for the next scheduled service
A few signals are worth acting on immediately rather than waiting: water pooling or dripping from an indoor unit, a noticeable drop in cooling power, unusual noise on startup, or a burning smell (stop using the unit immediately if you notice this one). None of these are necessarily serious, but all of them are cheaper to fix early than after they've caused further damage.
